A sunset cruise in a package is shared unless the wording says private. The fastest way to know is to ask for the maximum number of guests on the boat, in writing. That one answer tells you whether you will have a deck of your own.
This guide sits in our package evaluation topic. It helps you read the cruise line in a package before you pay.
What do the words on the package really mean?
“Sunset cruise” alone is a category, not a promise. It may be a large boat with a drinks bar and forty people, or a small boat for two.
“Private” usually means a charter for you alone. “Romantic” is a mood word and tells you nothing about headcount. If the page uses only mood words, assume shared until it is confirmed.
What boat types might you be offered?
| Type | What it feels like | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Large shared cruise | Social, music, crowded | Maximum guests, seating plan |
| Small-group cruise | Quieter, a few couples | Number of couples, space per couple |
| Private charter | Only the two of you and crew | Hours, crew, what is included |
| Traditional boat | Slower, simple, closer to the water | Shade, seating, safety kit |
| Catamaran or yacht | Comfortable deck, more space | Shared or full charter |
What should we check about timing?
A cruise is only a sunset cruise if it covers the sunset. Ask the sunset time for your dates, then compare it with departure and return times.
Our guide on checking sunset time before booking a tour explains how. Departure too early means you watch an afternoon sky, and departure too late means you return in the dark.
Which headcount questions matter most?
- What is the maximum number of guests?
- Which other couples will be on our departure?
- Is there open deck space, or is it all indoor seating?
- Can we choose our seat?
- Is the crew part of a tour group, or only for us?
What does a shared cruise still do well?
A shared cruise can be fun if you enjoy music and company. It also suits a tighter budget, because you are not paying for a whole boat. If privacy is your main wish, though, a shared boat may disappoint.
Our guide on a sunset cruise versus a private beach sunset helps you decide which gives you more.
What about transfers and safety?
Ask how you reach the pier and how you return, and whether the transfer is included. For boat travel in general, see private versus shared boats for what to ask on safety kit and sea state.
What should we do next?
- Copy the cruise wording from the package.
- Ask for boat type, maximum guests, and departure and return times.
- Ask for the sunset time on your date and a weather plan.
- If a private charter exists, ask for the extra price as a total for two.
- Compare it with the shared option, then choose by how much privacy you want.
